Brother Charged In Connection With Boogaard Overdose

(Minneapolis, MN) — The brother of former NHL player Derek Boogaard has been charged in connection with his death. The “Minneapolis Star-Tribune” reports Aaron Boogaard has been charged with third-degree felony sale of a controlled substance and gross misdemeanor of interference with a death. Derek Boogaard was found unresponsive in his Minneapolis apartment May 13th. The medical examiner ruled he died of an accidental mix of alcohol and prescription painkiller Oxycodone. Aaron Boogaard was arrested Wednesday and remains in the Hennepin County jail pending a court appearance.
According to the complaint, Aaron told police he gave Oxycodone to his brother the night before he died, saying Derek intended to go on a binger to celebrate his release from a chemical-dependency treatment center. He said he found his brother unresponsive at the apartment they shared the next day and flushed remaining pills of Oxycodone and Percocet down the toilet. Derek Boogaard played for the Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers. He was 28.
