Hard sanctions

Penn State got the big foot of the NCAA right square in the butt, and man did they deserve it! The NCAA, who usually swings a hammer made of nerf, did the right thing by crushing Penn St. The Penn St. backers say these sanctions are too strong. Really? Tell me what the proper penalty is for covering up the crimes of a serial child molester? We can quibble about what penalties are fair and unfair but I think if anyone at Penn St. would’ve done “The Right Thing” they wouldn’t be in this mess. Sure, the NCAA could’ve done nothing and said this was a criminal matter, but they actually showed some stones and sent a strong message that this kind of behavior cannot ever happen again.

This scandal does show just how twisted we are about sports in our society. Look at how the folks who love Penn St. football reacted to this scandal. From the nutbags who were going after the victims because they came forward to the fans who have defended Joe Paterno…it’s sad how important sports has become in our world. How about the guy who said that the sanctions against Penn St. were like 9/11! Yep, some Penn St. wacko compared a football program getting hit with sanctions to the loss of thousands of lives.

The Penn St. faithful are screaming how unfair all of this is to their beloved football team. Hey Nittany Lions fans…how about doing some screaming for Sandusky’s victims? Did you see the reaction of the students to the penalties as they were announced on television? The students were gasping like they were watching some tragedy unfold on TV. I think you students in State College need to talk to the people in Aurora, Colorado about what real tragedy is.

When it comes to Paterno, it’s alright to want to fire JoePa after he has a few losing seasons like in the early 2000’s. But it’s not alright to fire him for not turning in a pedophile? If this scandal would’ve broke in 2004 when Joe was coming off of four losing seasons in five years, I think the fan base would’ve screamed for Paterno’s head. JoePa could’ve been a hero, instead he was a coward. Fans are screaming about Joe losing 111 wins. I think Jerry Sandusky’s victims lost a more than that. To all of the Paterno apologists I just have one thing to ask them…What if that was your kid in that shower?

Guess who else is to blame for what went on in Happy Valley. US! Yep, it’s because of our crazy love of sports that administrators covered for a child rapist. They put their precious football team ahead of the health and welfare of children because they thought Penn State football was more important than little kids. We live and die with every win and loss of our favorite teams. We’d rather have a team full of criminals that go undefeated than a squad of good guys who finish .500. We live in a “If you’re not cheatin’ you’re not tryin’ sports culture”. We have a goof who tries to poison trees because his team lost a game and we have tough guys who throw beer bottles at teenage girls who have the audacity to wear the other teams gear into our stadium. We worship players like they’re Gods when they play for our team and then burn their jerseys and e-mail them death threats when they leave.

Instead of being mad at the NCAA, Penn St. fans should turn their outrage onto Graham Spanier, Tim Curley, Gary Schultz and Joe Paterno for not doing anything about a child rapist. If any one of those men had stood up and did the right thing, Penn St. wouldn’t be in the trouble it’s in today and more importantly, some of these victims might’ve been saved from that monster Sandusky. These fans should be ashamed and horrified that the people in charge cared so little about the children.  But instead, it seems like some Penn St. fans care more about what happens to the football program than what happened to those kids who were sexually assaulted…hmmm, just like Spanier, Schultz, Curley and Paterno.
