A play-off!!!! Finally! Sure, it’s only four teams but it’s better than nothing. Hey, beggars can’t be choosers. And a four team play-off still gives us a regular season we can all scream, yell and debate about…just like the good old days of the BCS! We can keep this dog and pony show going about not hurting the bowl games. Because most folks are worrying about what would happen to the Gildan New Mexico Bowl if there is a play-off. So, this is a good day.
But you’ve gotta love The Suits that run college football. At the beginning of the year they were telling us how great the BCS system was and how a play-off would be the end of civilization as we know it. Remember, a play-off would crush the bowls leaving hundreds out of work and the cities who host the bowls would have their economies decimated. Kids would have to play an extra game or two and it would affect their grades so bad they would probably flunk out of school and live their life under a bridge. All of us fans of a play-off always heard, “Well, the BCS is better then what we had before!” That’s like saying, “Yep, buttermilk sucks but it’s better than goat milk!”
I guess all of that changed. I wonder why? Oh, MONEY, that’s right. There are hundreds of millions of reasons The Suits got religion. That whole championship to the highest bidder idea was genius! Whoever came up with that should get a week-end in Vegas on the Fiesta Bowl’s company credit card. Word is that The Suits know how they’ll split up the loot but they aren’t telling just yet. My guess is that the money will not be evenly split between the have’s and the have not’s. That has about as much chance of happening as Charlie Sheen becoming a priest. And good luck to the Non-AQ schools, my high school football team has a better shot at getting into the play-off.
I think part of it also is that the only people who wanted to see LSU and Alabma play for the National Championship were the folks who root for LSU and Alabama. Sure, SEC fans could knock down a bunch a beers and swell up their chest up about an all-Southeastern Conference title game but everyone else just went…YAWN. What we got was a replay of the first snoozer between these two squads. I DVR’d the game so I could watch it if I ever had trouble sleeping. And the ratings backed that up. Remember, lower ratings means potentially lower advertising rates, which means potentially less MONEY. And The Suits know it’s always all about the MONEY.
Yes, a play-off… any kind of play-off…is great. While it’s true that no system is perfect, a four team play-off beats the heck out of the mess we’ve had. And it should be the best four teams but if you want to give extra credit for winning your conference championship that makes sense. And I can’t believe anyone would want to put an ex-college football coach on the selection committee. They would be soooo objective! So at the end of the day, I don’t care how or why The Suits got here, I’m just glad they did.
